DEVILSKIN: Be like the River ALBUM RECOMMENDATION.

Image
New Zealand's rock & Metal fans will be well familiar with the pedigree of Hamilton's DEVILSKIN- either from previous bands the members are /  have been in- ( i.e. Slipping Tongue, Chuganaut, World War Four, Seas of Conflict ). The band recently released their highly anticipated SECOND album," Be Like The River " which has since hit #1 on the album charts!  Check out 'Be Like The River' here:    Music fans hanging around Wanaka over New Years Eve will be able to catch them perform at this years (i.e. year to end 2016) Rhythm and Alps fest .  The band consists of: Jennie Skulander - Vocals Nail - Guitar Paul Martin - Bass Nic Martin - Drums  I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this record & easily managed to listen to the full album several times over. I've included a couple of music videos from the new album, so you can check out their sound for your self, but in summary: The bands sound is a heavy metal guitar / percussi

Xmen vs In Flames

Image
Gothenburg, Sweden's Melodic (or Alt to some) metal band In Flames (my podcast / interview with Anders here...) recently released the song 'Save Me' from their upcoming album "Battles".  If you listen to my podcast with Anders, you might notice that I ask a question relating to this particular song, in that one of the early guitar riffs (to my ears) calls back to the theme song of the Xmen animated adventures from the 90's. No one else seems to have made this connection, but it still drives me mad- particularly as during our chat, Anders denied any such connection...  I'll begrudgingly admit it's not really close to a copy BUT there is something there!  WHERE'S MY TIN FOIL HAT?!?!

The Heavy Metal Wanaka Podcast with Anders Friden of In Flames

THIS WEEK on the HEAVY METAL WANAKA PODCAST-  ANDERS FRIDEN  vocalist for Melodic Metal band  IN FLAMES ! The bands new upcoming album, "BATTLES" is due out 11th November 2016. Originally from Gothenburg, Swedish they recorded this- their 12th , album in Los Angeles - a change for the band. The bands sound continues to EVOLVE with each album, which might polarise fans of earlier records, but I feel that this album is an easy relisten as well as most of the songs being iconically  In Flames sounding.   Check us out on all of these:-

What's in a name?

RECENTLY, the topic of our name has been brought up a quick couple of times. In the interests of getting this down on record and to a lesser extent, to track how the perception might change over time, I thought I would run through what is in our name. HEAVY METAL WANAKA  At the surface level, it's a very simple descriptive name. It's matter of fact- the podcast topic is that of the Heavy Metal music and I am based in the South Island New Zealand town of Wanaka. These are tangible entities- you can physically visit the town of Wanaka while listening to music of the Heavy Metal genre. WANAKA IS METAL?  Wanaka and the surrounding area is know for many things, but music, let alone heavy metal is certainly not on anyone's list for the area. Following this logic, the podcast name now works in a type of clean joke humour. In this, the joke is at the same level as referring to your town as 'sunny', when it is most clearly, and very obviously not. A clean Dad-joke t
